Bodhi Tree Foundation was founded by Sarah and Mark Ferris and is registered 501(C)(3) organization.
Sarah is a Registered Nurse with experience in antepartum, labor &delivery, postpartum and newborn care. She has traveled
extensively around the world but feels most 'at home' when she is in Nepal or Tibet. In 2000 Sarah volunteered with the Nepal
Trust and it was during this time that she
was introduced to Humla. Since that time sha has longed to go back and be able to
do more to help the local Humli people improve the quality of their life. After a family trek to Nepal in 2007 Sarah decided
it was time to get involved with healthcare in Humla again and founded the Bodhi Tree Foundation.
After
graduating from the University of Montana with a degree Forestry Mark set off to explore the Himalayas with friends. In 1998
Mark convinced Sarah to travel back to Asia with him and they both fell in love with Nepal. It was after this trip
that they decided to do some volunteer work with the Nepal Trust. Since that time Mark has always had a special place in his
heart for Humla. Mark's enthusiasm and dedication to helping the Humli people was a catalyst in the founding of the Bodhi Tree
Foundation.
Family is a strong force for Mark and Sarah and it is with the strength of their family
and their extended family in Nepal that great things are possible. The time that Mark and Sarah have spent in Nepal has allowed
these relationships to develop that are now blossoming into tangible results for the people of Humla.
We would like to thank the following people for helping us to become what we are today.
The Himalayan
Innovative Society is a Nepali non government organization that the Bodhi Tree Foundation works very closely with to facilitate many
of its programs. The Himalayan Innovative Society (THIS) is also involved in the establishment and maintaining of four Community
Learning Centers in Humla that are currently helping over six thousand people. THIS has also worked with UNSECO in documenting
and perserving the local heritage.
